A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11880009B2) outlines a method for monitoring targeted natural resources within an underground formation using seismic data processing. The method involves obtaining baseline and monitor datasets from seismic surveys conducted at different times, generating synthetic datasets based on baseline and monitor models, and calculating a joint inversion time-lag cost function with target regularization. By updating the baseline and monitor models through minimizing the cost function, an image of the underground formation is generated to identify changes in the location and volume of the natural resources over time.

The patent also describes a seismic data processing apparatus that implements the method, featuring an interface for dataset acquisition, a data processing unit for generating synthetic datasets, calculating the cost function, and updating the models iteratively until a convergence criterion is met. The apparatus is designed to identify changes in natural resource locations and volumes within the underground formation based on the updated models. Additionally, a non-transitory computer-readable recording medium storing executable codes is disclosed, enabling a computer to perform the monitoring method by obtaining datasets, generating synthetic datasets, updating models, and generating images to track changes in natural resource distribution over time. The weights of the total variation norm and model difference norm are determined based on the distance to a target zone, with convergence criteria related to the cost function ensuring accurate monitoring of the targeted resources.
