A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11923139B2) discloses a novel device comprising current collector elements coated with a composite material consisting of a carbonaceous matrix and a polymeric binder capable of withstanding temperatures up to 200°C without degradation. The carbonaceous matrix, based on graphene and doped with transition metal dichalcogenides, is a 3D-multilayer structure formed through a hydrothermal treatment. The device is filled with a non-aqueous electrolyte composition containing cations and anions in a liquid medium of high boiling temperature solvents and ionic liquids, ensuring stability at temperatures exceeding 150°C.

Furthermore, the device can be configured as a supercapacitor, with multiple current collector elements serving as positive and negative electrodes, connected by electrical conductors and separated by a porous separator made of a thermally stable polymer, ceramic, or glass. The device can be assembled into a multilayer structure, sealed with a polymer or resin, and designed as a coin cell or pouch cell, with the option of using a photo-curable resin for sealing. The innovative design and materials used in this device offer enhanced performance and stability, making it a promising solution for electric energy storage applications requiring high-temperature operation and efficient electrolyte management.
