Eni has patented a process for producing liquid and gaseous fuels from biomass. The method involves pre-treating biomass, subjecting it to subcritical hydrothermal liquefaction, and then separating the resulting phases. The process continues with anaerobic reactions to produce biogas and bio-oil, offering an innovative approach to sustainable fuel production. A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11884565B2) outlines a process for producing liquid and gaseous fuels from biomass. The method involves sending biomass through a pre-treatment section to create a homogeneous phase that can be easily moved or pumped. This phase is then subjected to subcritical hydrothermal liquefaction at specific temperature and pressure ranges to form a liquefied phase. The resulting liquefied phase undergoes further separation processes to obtain different fuel components like bio-oil and gaseous fuel, along with a solid residue classified as secondary solid fuel.

The patent also details two alternative modes for continuing the process post-separation. In the first mode, the aqueous phase is subjected to a multiple-stage anaerobic reaction followed by an aerobic reaction to obtain purified water. In the second mode, the mixed phase is separated to obtain an aqueous phase, bio-oil, and gaseous fuel, which then undergo a similar anaerobic and aerobic reaction process. The patent specifies various temperature, pressure, and time parameters for each stage of the process, ensuring efficient conversion of biomass into usable liquid and gaseous fuels.
