A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11888184B2) discloses a PolyMET plate designed for use in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The PolyMET plate is constructed from a polymeric and conductive material, featuring in-plane conductive pathways defining an electrochemical reaction area on one surface, with a through-plane conductive pathway extending through the body. The second surface of the plate includes a heat removal jacket made of an electrically insulating thermoplastic material, enhancing heat dissipation during operation.

The body of the PolyMET plate consists of a polymeric material or a combination of glass and polymer material, with a small percentage of conductive material forming the through-plane conductive pathways. The plate is designed to distribute fuel and air through a flow field on the first surface, while the heat removal jacket on the second surface facilitates coolant circulation for heat dissipation. In a PEM fuel cell stack, the PolyMET plate serves as a crucial component, sandwiching the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and aiding in the transfer of electrons between the anode and cathode plates. Additionally, a cooling circuit and ion balancing unit are integrated into the PEM fuel cell to manage heat dissipation and reduce electrical conductivity of the coolant, respectively.
