China is the world’s 53rd-largest producer of natural gas and the country’s output increased by 5% in 2022, over 2021. The country accounts for 45% of global production, with the world’s other largest producers being the US, Russia and Iran. Over the five years to 2022, production from China increased by a CAGR of 6% and is expected to rise by a CAGR of 0.39% between 2023 and 2027.

The largest producers of natural gas in China are China National Petroleum, China Petrochemical and China National Offshore Oil. China National Petroleum was the largest producer of natural gas in 2022 with output up by 5% on 2021.

China Petrochemical was the second-largest producer, with output up by 2%, and China National Offshore Oil was third with an increase of 8% on the previous year.

There are 43 natural gas producing fields in China of which seven are located offshore and the rest onshore. The Shanxi has the majority of the natural gas fields in the country with ten.
