Phillips 66 has filed a patent for a system that aims to reduce the amount of dissolved salts in hydrocarbon feedstock. The system includes a pretreated feedstock supply, a wash water supply, an alkalinity modifier supply, a desalting vessel, a desalted crude outlet, and a wash water brine outlet. The desalted crude outlet contains hydrocarbon feedstock with fewer dissolved salts, while the wash water brine outlet contains water with more dissolved salts. A recently filed patent (Publication Number: US20230295520A1) describes a system for desalting hydrocarbon feedstock. The system includes a pretreated hydrocarbon feedstock supply, a wash water supply, an alkalinity modifier supply, a desalting vessel, a desalted crude outlet, and a wash water brine outlet.

In this system, the pretreated hydrocarbon feedstock supply contains hydrocarbon feedstock and dissolved salts, while the wash water supply contains water. The alkalinity modifier supply includes one or more alkalinity modifiers or solutions. The desalting vessel is where the contents of the pretreated hydrocarbon feedstock supply, wash water supply, and alkalinity modifier supply flow into. The desalted crude outlet and the wash water brine outlet flow out of the desalting vessel.

The alkalinity modifier supply is in fluid communication with the wash water supply and/or the pretreated hydrocarbon feedstock supply before flowing into the desalting vessel. Within the desalting vessel, the contents of the pretreated hydrocarbon feedstock supply, wash water supply, and alkalinity modifier supply mix, and the dissolved salts from the feedstock are transferred into the water from the wash water supply.

The resulting concentration of the alkalinity modifier in the wash water following the mixture is between about 100 ppm and 2000 ppm by weight, or between about 300 ppm and 1200 ppm by weight. The alkalinity modifier can be selected from a group of compounds including sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, potassium bicarbonate, potassium carbonate, ammonium bicarbonate, and ammonium carbonate.

The system ensures that the contents of the wash water brine outlet from the desalting vessel have a pH between 5.0 and 8.0. Additionally, the contents of the desalted crude outlet from the desalting vessel have a salt composition of not more than 6 ppm by weight.

The hydrocarbon feedstock used in this system can be selected from a group of materials including crude petroleum oil, triglyceride-based feeds, seed oils, tire oils, slop oil, biomass oils, nut oils, and combinations thereof.

Overall, this patented system provides an efficient and effective method for desalting hydrocarbon feedstock, resulting in a desalted crude product with significantly reduced salt content.
