A recently filed patent (Publication Number: US20230314270A1) describes a pin hole inspection apparatus designed to determine if the vacuum-packed state of a Front Opening Shipping Box (FOSB) is defective. The apparatus consists of several components, including a receiving unit that supports the FOSB, an adsorption unit that pulls the film paper surrounding the FOSB, a displacement measurement unit that measures the swelling of the film paper, and a processing unit that compares the measurement displacement value with a pre-stored reference displacement value to determine if a pin hole is present.

The receiving unit of the pin hole inspection apparatus includes a tray for holding the FOSB and alignment means that apply pressure to the circumferential part of the FOSB to ensure it is positioned correctly within the tray. The adsorption unit comprises a cylinder that can move forwards and rearwards towards the surfaces of the FOSB, a vacuum adsorption pad attached to the front end of the cylinder, and a vacuum creation means that creates a vacuum state between the vacuum adsorption pad and the film paper. By moving the cylinder forwards, the vacuum adsorption pad is adsorbed onto the film paper, and then the cylinder is moved rearwards to pull the film paper using the adsorptive power of the vacuum adsorption pad. The displacement measurement unit includes a measurement plate and a displacement sensor that measures the displacement of the film paper when the cylinder moves forwards and when it moves rearwards.

Another embodiment of the pin hole inspection apparatus includes a transfer unit for moving the FOSB, ports installed in the progress direction of the transfer unit, adsorption units installed in the ports, displacement measurement units installed in the ports, and a processing unit. Each adsorption unit is vacuum-adsorbed onto the film paper surrounding the FOSB and pulls the film paper at a set pressure for a set time. The displacement measurement units measure the degrees of swelling of the film paper pulled through the adsorption units, and the processing unit compares the measurement displacement values with a pre-stored reference displacement value to determine if a pin hole is present.

The patent also describes a pin hole inspection method that aligns the FOSB, swells the film paper by pulling it through an adsorption unit, measures the displacements of the film paper, and performs pin hole inspection by comparing the measurement displacement value with a pre-stored reference displacement value.

Overall, this patent presents an apparatus and method for inspecting pin holes in vacuum-packed FOSBs, providing a potential solution for detecting defects in the vacuum-packed state of these shipping boxes.
