A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11885488B2) discloses a plant designed for chemical looping combustion of solid hydrocarbon feedstock, producing unburnt residues and utilizing oxygen-carrying solid particles. The plant includes a reduction reactor and an oxidation reactor, both operating as fluidized beds, along with a solid/solid separator to separate oxygen-carrying solid particles from unburnt residues. The solid/solid separator features a chamber with a dense phase lower part and a dilute phase upper part, along with inlets, drains, and outlets strategically placed for efficient separation.

Furthermore, the patented plant may also include a gas/solid separator connected to the solid/solid separator, facilitating the discharge of gas depleted in light particles of unburnt residues. Additionally, a transportation pipe is integrated to recycle unburnt residue particles back to the reduction reactor. The design of the plant, including the rectangular parallelepipedal shape of the chambers and inlets, as well as the specific configurations of the means for distribution of gas/solid mixtures within the solid/solid separator, are detailed in the patent claims. Various embodiments describe cooling mechanisms, such as metal tubes for heat exchange, and different shapes for the distribution means, like V-shaped sections or curved plates, to optimize the combustion process and particle separation efficiency.
