Multinational power and automation technology provider ABB has received a contract to modify existing and install new electrical systems and an electrical network monitoring and control system (ENMCS) at Petronas’ crude oil refinery in Melaka, Malaysia.
The Melaka Refinery is currently being upgraded to be able to comply with the Malaysian Government’s target for Euro-5 grade diesel by 2020 to improve air quality.

The contract was awarded by Hyundai Engineering, which was selected by Petronas’ subsidiary Malaysian Refining Company in February to provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services at the refinery.
Under the EPC contract, Hyundai Engineering will provide services to upgrade the existing oil refining facilities to meet the new Euro-5 standard, which limits sulphur levels to a maximum of 10mg/kg.
The scope of the contract awarded to ABB involves designing and supplying medium and low-voltage switchgears and variable speed drives for the project, which includes a new substation and modification to existing substations.
ABB will also supply a direct current (DC) uninterruptible power supply system, an alarm and supervisory system, as well as its ABB Ability System 800xA based process power manager.
