Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has granted a $490m (Dh1.8m) contract to BGP, a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Company (CNPC), to expand its ongoing onshore and offshore three-dimensional (3D) seismic survey, aimed at uncovering additional oil and gas resources.

The 3D Mega Seismic Survey project, launched by ADNOC in late 2018 in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, is claimed to be the largest continuous seismic survey in the world.

The partnership between ADNOC and BGP will utilise advanced AI tools to expedite the analysis of seismic data.

This technology is expected to optimise resource recovery and improve the efficiency of existing infrastructure within ADNOC’s producing fields.

Covering an area of 85,000km², the project delivers high-resolution data that is integral for understanding the complex geological structures of the region.

ADNOC Upstream executive director Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy said: “ADNOC continues to capitalise on industry-leading technologies to maximise value creation and responsibly meet growing demand for energy.

“Our investment in the world’s largest 3D Mega Seismic Survey emphasises the role advanced technologies play in our operations, as we continue to realise the full potential of our oil and gas resources to ensure the UAE [United Arab Emirates] remains a long-term and reliable energy provider to the world.”

In a parallel development, ADNOC signed a 15-year sales and purchase agreement (SPA) for its lower-carbon Ruwais liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Abu Dhabi with SEFE Marketing and Trading Singapore, a subsidiary of Germany’s SEFE Securing Energy for Europe.

The SPA transformed the heads of agreement signed between the companies in March this year into a definitive agreement, securing the supply of one million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG from ADNOC.

Deliveries under this contract are set to begin in 2028 following the commissioning of the Ruwais project.

With this agreement, more than 7mtpa of the project’s capacity has now been allocated to international clients through long-term contracts.

The SPA is a part of the broader UAE-Germany Energy Security and Industry Accelerator agreement, established in 2022.

Notably, the Ruwais LNG facility is poised to become the first in the Middle East and Africa to operate on clean energy.
