US-based natural-gas distributor Atmos Energy has joined Our Nation’s Energy Future Coalition (ONE Future) to drive continued improvement in reducing methane emissions from its operations.

ONE Future is a voluntary union of natural gas supply chain companies focused on technology and policy solutions.

Atmos said that the move to join ONE Future mirrors its commitment to responsible and sustainable practices in its natural gas distribution businesses, as well as pipeline and storage operations.

Atmos Energy president and CEO Kevin Akers said: “Atmos Energy is proud to join the other members of ONE Future in demonstrating our commitment to the environment and the long-term sustainability of natural gas as a vital energy resource.

“We are dedicated to identifying operational and technological solutions that drive continuous improvement as we work to achieve our target of a 50% reduction in methane emissions from our natural gas distribution system by 2035.”

Atmos Energy added that it is committed to measure and report emissions and tracking the progress of its responsible and sustainable practices that confirm with ONE Future protocols.

Besides ONE Future, Atmos Energy is also a founding partner of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s are voluntary programmes Natural Gas Methane Challenge and Natural Gas STAR Programmes.

These programmes support oil and natural gas firms to improve efficiency in minimising methane emissions in their operations.

In a press statement, Atmos said: “Atmos Energy also voluntarily reports gas operations data in the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) and the American Gas Association (AGA) environmental, social, governance, and sustainability (ESG/sustainability) template.”
