Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) has awarded a $4.2bn contract for its Bapco Modernisation Programme (BMP) to a consortium of TechnipFMC, Samsung Engineering and Tecnicas Reunidas.

Located on Bahrain’s Eastern coast, the project provides for the expansion of the capacity of the existing Sitra oil refinery from 267,000 up to 360,000 barrels per day (bpd).

In addition, the project includes improvisation of energy efficiency, valorisation of the heavy part of the crude oil barrel, enhancing products slate and ensuring environmental compliance.

To be executed on an engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) lump sum turnkey basis, the project is expected to be completed in 2022.

Major units of the project include residue hydrocracking unit, hydrocracker unit, hydro desulfurisation unit, crude distillation unit, vacuum distillation unit, saturated gas plant, hydrogen production unit, hydrogen recovery unit and sulphur recovery unit.

The project will also comprise tail gas treatment unit, sour water stripper unit, amine recovery unit, bulk acid gas removal unit, sulphur solidification unit and sulphur handling facilities.

Additionally, the scope of the contract includes utilities and offsites.
