Cadent Gas has reported an increase in the demand for renewable biomethane at its compressed natural gas (CNG) refuelling station in Leyland, Lancashire, UK.
Operated by CNG Fuels, the refuelling station is witnessing greater demand from retail and logistics firms such as Waitrose, Asda, DHL, Argos and H Parkinson Haulage.

Data revealed that the volume of gas dispensed at the station in March this year rose by 170% in comparison to the same period last year.
British member of parliament (MP) and parliamentary private secretary Seema Kennedy said: “We’ve got huge wagons fuelling up with 100% renewable gas. This is really exciting, it is the decarbonised future that we’re all looking for.”
Last year, a report indicated that heavy goods vehicles (HGV) refuelling at the site emitted up to 84% less carbon than diesel equivalents, as well as far less air-polluting nitrogen oxides.
Cadent transport strategy manager David Jones said: “We were delighted to host Seema Kennedy and explain how this technology can support government targets for clean growth and significantly help reduce air pollution in our towns and cities.

By GlobalData“This site is attracting lots of interest. Its impressive results prove that gas can be the fuel of choice for HGVs and have a big impact in reducing UK carbon emissions.”
Renewable biomethane is said to be one of the most cost-effective low-carbon alternatives to diesel for HGVs. CNG dispensed at the site costs around 45% less than diesel.
CNG Fuels CEO Philip Fjeld said: “Following the success of our first site at Leyland, we are expanding our refuelling infrastructure nationwide to help fleet operators save money, cut carbon and clean up our air.”
