Liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplier Edge Gathering Virtual Pipelines 2 (Edge) has produced and delivered its LNG in the US.

Requiring no pipeline, Edge is claimed to be the first feasible route to market stranded gas reserves and serves as a revenue-generating substitute to venting or flaring associated gas from oil production.

In May, Edge began LNG production on-well site, accessing Marcellus gas in Pennsylvania. The gas is delivered by trucks to its first customers, including Emera Energy Services.

Edge has so far delivered 30,000gal of LNG to a delivery point at a New England gas utility, which is 300 miles away from the Marcellus production site.

The virtual pipeline works with the deployment of Galileo Global Technologies’ transportable Cyrobox LNG production and liquefaction equipment at the source of natural gas wells and delivering the LNG directly to customers.

Edge Cryobox units are designed to fit on a standard 40ft tractor trailer, which can be quickly connected and disconnected from feedstock gas wells. These units are self-powered from gas, thereby eliminating the need for a grid connection.

Edge chief executive officer Mark Casaday said: “It is estimated that stranded wells account for up to 60% of global reserves, and up to 20% of those drilled in Marcellus, showing the scale of this untapped resource.”

“The virtual pipeline model has already been deployed in Mendoza, Argentina, where the first LNG-fuelled power plant running entirely on previously stranded gas, is now well established. With EDGE, well-owners can monetise these assets for the first time, and the market benefits from the lowest-cost and highest-quality LNG available.”

The company purchases the Cryobox units directly from Galileo Global, which is also a shareholder, along with private equity firm Blue Water Energy.

Edge has signed an agreement with NextEra Energy Marketing to serve as exclusive sales and marketing partner in the US.

NextEra Energy Marketing is a fully owned and indirect subsidiary of utility company NextEra Energy.
