According to LR, the contract is for third-party verification and Canadian Registration Number (CRN) services.

LR is expected to perform these services during the pre-commissioning, commissioning, and startup phases of the LNG project.

Furthermore, LR noted that it will validate the technical integrity verification plans for engineering, fabrication and commissioning, as well as the change management plan (CMP) for the design and construction phases of the project.

LR President John Hicks said: “Winning this major project demonstrates LR’s strong capability and long history in the LNG space following recent wins with Goldboro, Bearhead and LNG Canada, three of the largest LNG projects in Canada makes LR the preferred classification society to work with in Canada.

“We are incredibly proud to be awarded this contract and look forward to working with all the stakeholders, including BCOGC and LNGFR on this project.”

In addition, LR will provide assistance in developing a complete life cycle Pressure Equipment Safety Management Plan, from vendor selection through to the module yard, and the final handover to LNG Canada at the Kitimat area.

A joint venture named LNG Canada was set up in 2011 by Shell Canada Energy (50%), PetroChina (20%), Korea Gas Corporation (15%) and Mitsubishi Corporation (15%) for the phased development of the new LNG export facility.

LNG Canada’s proposed facility will include LNG processing units, also referred to as ‘trains’. These units will separate impurities, such as CO2, water, condensate and sulphur from natural gas.

In June 2018, Petronas subsidiary North Montney LNG (NMLLP) signed an agreement to acquire an equity position in the LNG Canada project.

In January 2016, British Columbia Oil and Gas Commission (BCOGC) granted a facility permit to LNG Canada to construct the LNG export facility in Kitimat.
