UK based natural gas firm BG Group has started production for its second LNG unit at its $20.4bn Queensland LNG export project in Australia.

The project has been under construction since 2010 and is expected to reach full production by the middle of next year.

First LNG from the Train 2 will be transported via the Maran Gas Posidonia tanker, BG said.

Commercial operations for the unit will start after it is commissioned.

Train 1 for the project had started production in December 2014, with 27 cargoes been shipped till date.

“The completion of our upstream infrastructure and the two LNG trains are achievements of which BG Group, particularly our team in Australia, can be proud.

“We have already shipped more than 1.5 million tonnes of LNG from Queensland, and Train 2 will add significant further volumes and flexibility to our LNG shipping and marketing portfolio.”

Once fully operational, Train 1 & 2 combined will have the capacity to produce enough LNG for filling up ten vessels in a month. Both the units will be able to facilitate nearly eight million tonnes of annual LNG exports.
