C6 Technologies' new ComTrac system is undergoing field trials following extensive test well runs.

The company currently has one package onshore in the Middle East, and another package operated by Archer offshore in the North Sea, with several runs completed and further operations planned.

A ComTrac system package includes a reel of a spoolable 12mm diameter semi-stiff carbon composite rod with internal electrical conductors of up to 10km in length, a control / spooling unit, and an injector unit and head that push or pull the rod into or out of a well and provide well pressure control.

The company claims the system offers many benefits over common intervention methods due to its special features such as the low-friction factor, the high-tensile strength, and the capability of power and signal communication with downhole strings of the composite rod, along with the ability to enter pressured wells and the flexible constant-tension surface rig-up of the deployment system.

"The ComTrac system and components can be operated in both offshore and onshore environments."

These features imply that the ComTrac system can offer logging, perforating, electro-mechanical intervention, and standard mechanical interventions in well depths and well conditions that other present rigless conveyance methods cannot.

The features of surface deployment equipment also eliminate the requirement for line-of-sight or sheave wheel rig ups and place the maximum tension point within the injector system, which bolsters operational safety.
