Cuadrilla Site

Cuadrilla Resources has announced two new exploration sites in Lancashire as part of its plan to realise the full potential of shale gas resources in the region.

The company intends to apply for planning permission to drill, fracture and test the flow of gas from up to four exploration wells on each of the sites, at Roseacre Wood and Preston New Road near Little Plumpton.

Cuadrilla will also make separate applications to install two seismic arrays to monitor the hydraulic fracturing process.

According to the company, independent planning and environmental consultancy Arup will prepare an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for each of the new exploration sites.

In order to support the development of its proposals, the company has committed to an extensive programme of public consultation. The Cuadrilla team is currently speaking to residents and community representatives living close to the two sites.

Cuadrilla chief executive Francis Egan said that the company has undertaken extensive technical and geological analysis to assess the company’s site options and has decided to initially focus on just two sites.

"This will allow us to reduce the potential impact on the local area during exploration while still gathering the important information we need to determine how much gas could be recovered," Egan added.

As part of its sites review, the company has decided not to apply for permission to carry out hydraulic fracturing at its Grange Hill site at present.
