Canadian pipeline company Enbridge will invest $7m over the next two years in additional equipment in a bid to improve emergency response capabilities within Michigan, US.
The equipment will be deployed along the company’s Line 5 pipeline in Michigan, including the Straits of Mackinac.

The company noted that its aim is to develop the Great Lakes region through the purchase of this equipment.
Enbridge senior manager of emergency response Stephen Lloyd said: "In the very unlikely event that we have to respond to a pipeline incident, we’re ready."
"And with this additional purchase we’ll enhance our existing capabilities with some of the industry’s leading emergency response equipment."
The company will purchase additional equipment including several high-speed oil containment and recovery systems, additional skimmers, ice response skimming systems, as well as additional containment, protection and absorbent boom.

Marine pollution control president Charles Usher said: "The investments that Enbridge has committed to making in spill response assets are impressive.
"I can’t think of another company that has made this level of investment without being required to do so by a regulation or governmental agency."
