Essar Oil, a subsidiary of Essar Energy, has commissioned an amine regeneration unit at its Vadinar refinery in the Indian state of Gujarat.
The commissioning of this unit is part of the phase I expansion of the refinery’s capacity from 14 million tonnes per year to 18mtpa. The first phase of the expansion project is nearing completion and the increased throughput of 18mtpa will begin by March 2012.

The company is also executing an optimisation project at the refinery to further increase its capacity to 20mtpa by September this year.
In 2010, Essar Oil unveiled its plan to enhance the capacity of the Vadinar refinery through upgrades, debottlenecking and converting the units, and/or the addition of new units/facilities. The capacity expansion, complexity enhancement and subsequent optimisation will enable the refinery to process 87% ultra-heavy crudes.
Essar Oil managing director and CEO Lalit Gupta said that the expanded refinery will have the flexibility to produce higher value products, including pet coke.
"After the commissioning of the isomerisation unit last month, the refinery team is working towards ensuring the commissioning of all the remaining units that form a part of our phase I expansion," said Gupta.
