This move comes in the wake of a challenging atmosphere within the industry, in terms of falling crude prices, political climate and the need for safety and sustainability, according to KBR.

IBM chemical and petroleum industries global managing director Luq Niazi said: "As chemical and petroleum companies strive to remain competitive, implementing a digital strategy will help optimise capital expenditures, reduce operating costs and help maximise the potential of the knowledge and skills of their people.

As part of the collaboration agreement, KBR's understanding of the hydrocarbons market and large-scale capital projects will be combined with IBM's solutions, including cloud computing, advanced analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), and cognitive business solutions.

The historical and real-time data of the clients, when combined with KBR's technical and engineering expertise and IBM's technology platform, will further support clients to improve decision-making and ensure more effective monitoring and maintenance of operations.

In addition, the new digital solutions will allow customers to reduce capital expenditure and operational expenses, improve operational efficiency, lower delivery schedules, boost facility uptime and enhance plant safety.
