Polish oil and gas company Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo (PGNiG) and Chevron Polska Energy Resources have signed an agreement to appraise shale gas deposits in four exploration licence areas in south-eastern Poland.

A joint technical committee appointed by the companies will determine the detailed scope and schedule of exploration work, which will include drilling of an exploration well.

The collaboration will enable the parties to reduce costs and share risks, while increasing the pace of the exploration work, speeding up the process of assessing potential shale gas resources in Poland.

Performing the exploration work jointly, PGNiG and Chevron will determine its scope and decide on financing methods at all stages of the relationship. The companies will also exchange geological data on the licence areas.

PGNiG management board president Mariusz Zawisza said that the company will be able to draw on its experience in shale gas exploration by collaborating with Chevron.

"We hope that this partnership will be beneficial to both parties by allowing us to optimise the costs and improve the effectiveness of our exploration efforts," Zawisza added.

The agreement, which is part of PGNiG’s new policy of openness towards other companies involved in exploration projects of shale gas in the country, is set to open the initial stage of collaboration between the parties in joint shale gas exploration projects. Upon reaching the second stage of collaboration, the companies will carry out further exploration work in relevant licence areas.
