Technip has awarded a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract to SBM Offshore for three, large-scale turret mooring systems for the proposed $40bn Browse floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) development off Australia.

Under the contract, the FEED elements of Browse’s turret work will be included.

According to SBM, the three, large-scale turrets are expected to be designed similar to but slightly bigger than the Shell Prelude FLNG turret awarded to it 2011.

Operated by Woodside Energy, the Browse project is located 425km north of Broome in Western Australia.

The reference case of the project is based on three FLNG facilities to develop the Brecknock, Calliance and Torosa fields in the Browse basin.

The Browse joint venture selected the use of FLNG technology in September 2013, in conjunction with a subsea development as the preferred development concept for the Browse resources.

Final investment decision with regard to the project is targeted after the end of the FEED, which will be announced in the second half of next year.

The Australian Department of Environment announced on 17 August that the proposed development had been granted Commonwealth environmental approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

In August, energy services company Wood Group secured a contract to perform FEED work for the development.
