UOP, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International, has been selected by National Refinery Limited (NRL) to provide process technology for a refinery expansion in Pakistan.

UOP will deliver its Uniflex technology for the project to upgrade heavy residue into high-value distillate products. According to the company, Uniflex helps refiners process the bottom of the barrel, the heaviest portions of a barrel of crude also known as vacuum residue, into transportation fuels and other products.

This technology will also be integrated with the Honeywell subsidiary’s Unionfining hydroprocessing system to process distillates into diesel fuel and naphtha into feedstock used to produce gasoline. NRL will also convert vacuum gas oil from the refinery to diesel and lube base oils using UOP’s Unicracking and fuels dewaxing technologies.

UOP vice president and general manager of process technology and equipment Pete Piotrowski said Uniflex offers the highest conversion rate of bottom-of-the-barrel crudes to high-value products available now. "Demand for low-value products such as fuel oil that are traditionally produced from these heavy residues is stagnant. At the same time, diesel demand is growing at a rate faster than all other transportation fuels. In an integrated facility like NRL’s, Uniflex process technology can help refiners close this gap and increase their profitability," he added.

Upon completion, which is scheduled for 2016, the refinery will produce about 40,000bpd of diesel fuel and 4,500bpd of lube base oils.

US-based UOP is a supplier and licensor of process technology, catalysts, adsorbents, process plants and consulting services to the petroleum refining, petrochemical and gas processing industries.
