US-based natural gas company Spire has begun using robotic technology to deliver natural gas to its customers.
Developed by New York-based robotics-as-a-service (RaaS) solutions provider ULC Robotics, the CISBOT robot can travel through large-diameter gas mains to repair joints from the inside without causing any interruptions to natural gas service.

The joints connect pieces of pipe at 12ft intervals along the pipeline. These are inspected regularly to minimise future repairs and ensure integrity.
Future leaks can be prevented by these inspections and repairs, which extend the life of pipes underground.
Spire operations vice-president Tim Goodson said: “At Spire, we’re constantly looking for innovative ways to improve the delivery of natural gas – both for field operations and for our customers. While the robot focuses on this project, additional construction crews are freed up to work on other important projects around the metro.”
The robotic technology will help Spire in completing repairs in weeks, unlike traditional approaches that can take months.

By GlobalDataThe CISBOT can travel underground for 750ft in either direction. Due to the technology, fewer crews and large equipment are required, which in turn help to avoid costs for customers.
Goodson added: “We will be sealing around 14,000ft of pipeline robotically this year with limited disruption to neighbourhoods. Using this technology, we’re delivering on our promise to customers to always provide a reliable system while keeping our rates as low as possible.”
ULC Robotics field operations vice-president Ryan McGowan said: “Partnering on these projects demonstrates Spire’s commitment to investing in infrastructure to better serve the needs of customers. Identifying and sealing these pipeline joints with CISBOT helps Spire to provide even safer and more reliable service for years to come.”
Last August, the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission has issued a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity for the Spire STL Pipeline.
This approval will enable the pipeline to proceed with the land acquisition and other pre-construction activities.
