French energy firm TotalEnergies and Italy’s Eni have made a new gas discovery in Block 6 offshore Cyprus following the drilling of the Zeus-1 well.

Located 162km off the Cyprus coast and 5km West of Cronos-1, Zeus-1 well has been drilled and tested using the Tungsten Explorer drillship.

Representing the third consecutive discovery in Block 6 following Cronos-1 and Calypso-1, Zeus-1 confirms the promising outlook for the area, Eni said.

Following drilling, the Zeus-1 well encountered 105m of net gas pay in a carbonate reservoir sequence.

Eni said in a statement: “Results of the test are being incorporated in the evaluation of the discoveries cluster that will drive subsequent studies and operations targeting a fast-track development of Block 6.”

As per the preliminarily estimate, the gas in place associated to this reservoir ranges between two and three trillion cubic feet (TCF).

TotalEnergies exploration senior vice-president Kevin McLachlan said: “This success at Zeus-1 further enhances the potential of Block 6, only four months after the Cronos-1 discovery.

“New data gathered from the well will assist our ongoing assessment of fast-track development options for the discovered resources.” 

Eni operates the block with a 50% stake while TotalEnergies holds the remaining 50% interest.

In Cyprus, Eni operates Blocks 2, 3, 6, 8, and 9. It also owns stakes in Blocks 7 and 11 that are operated by TotalEnergies.

Recently, TotalEnergies and its joint venture partners secured new licence for exploration at Agua Marinha block offshore Brazil.
