Norwegian oil exploration and development company Aker BP is advancing its operations by expanding the use of Cognite Atlas AI.

The strategic move is aimed at enhancing efficiency, reducing operational costs, boosting productivity and enabling the company to lead AI integration in the energy sector.

Aker BP’s collaboration with Cognite, a software-as-a-service company, is part of its "AI-first" strategy to easily integrate AI across its industrial and business processes.

The partnership aims to use Cognite Atlas AI, which offers pre-configured agents and a low-code workbench to facilitate the creation of industrial AI agents.

The tools are integrated with Cognite Data Fusion, providing a solid data foundation for significant operational enhancements for Aker BP.

This partnership focuses on automating complex processes, enabling engineers to quickly access industrial expertise and streamline critical workflows.

The workflows include automating document processing to improve supply chain efficiency and proactive barrier management.

Aker BP chief digital officer Paula Doyle said: “Our collaboration with Cognite on Atlas AI represents a significant leap forward in our digital transformation journey.

“This partnership underscores our commitment to a continued AI-first, data-driven approach with Cognite, embracing agentic AI to further drive efficiency, enhance decision-making and optimise our operations across the board.”

Aker BP said that its AI initiatives include the automation of equipment registration, which aims to substantially reduce engineering hours.

The company is also developing AI agents for root cause analysis to identify relevant information, create cause maps and propose analysis steps.

The agents have already demonstrated a reduction of more than 70% in the time engineers spend on this analysis.

The collaboration is part of a broader effort to build an AI-ready data foundation for predictive maintenance and optimise production chemistry, said Aker BP.

Cognite strategic projects EVP Francois Laborie said: “Aker BP's legacy isn’t just about being a digital leader; it's about pioneering the future.

“This partnership is a powerful testament to their unwavering commitment to an AI-first strategy.

“By merging Aker BP's deep industry expertise with Cognite’s Atlas AI, we are doing more than just solving today’s challenges; we are equipping them with the internal competence to scale AI across their entire business, fundamentally empowering their workforce for tomorrow.”

Last month, Aker BP completed the Omega Alfa exploration campaign in the Norwegian North Sea, leading to the discovery of oil.
