Equinor, together with its partners, has identified oil, condensate, and gas in the Tyrihans Øst prospect, located about 250km southwest of Brønnøysund in the Norwegian Sea.

The discovery was made through exploration well 6407/1-B-2 H, the first well drilled within production licence 1121, using the Transocean Encourage drilling rig, in 275m water depth.

The exploration drilling targeted two geological formations in the Middle Jurassic period, the Garn Formation and the Ile Formation.

It reached a measured depth of 4,590m, with a vertical depth of 4,045m below sea level.

The well encountered around 6m of condensate and light oil column in the Garn Formation, with sandstone exhibiting poor to moderate reservoir characteristics.

In the Ile Formation, the well found a 63m gas and condensate column within sandstone that displayed poor to good reservoir properties.

The well was terminated in the Ror Formation, also within the Middle Jurassic sequence.

Preliminary estimates indicate the discovery contains between 0.2 and 1.3 million standard cubic metres (mscm) of recoverable oil equivalent, which equates to one to eight million barrels (mbbl).

The well was not formation-tested. It will now be temporarily plugged and abandoned as part of standard procedure, and the rig will be moved to drill a production well at Åsgard.

Equinor and its partners plan to evaluate the discovery for a potential production well at the same site, with the intention of routing production from Tyrihans to the Kristin installation.

They will continue to assess the commercial viability and development options for the Tyrihans Øst discovery within the existing infrastructure and future field developments.

Earlier this month, Equinor and Aker BP identified hydrocarbons at the Lofn and Langemann prospects in the Sleipner area in the Norwegian North Sea.

The exploration wells, designated 15/5-8 S for Lofn and 15/5-8 A for Langemann, were drilled using the Deepsea Atlantic rig at a depth of 107m below the water's surface.
