First firing completed at hydrogen-ready Thurrock Power plant

Combined with the adjacent Thurrock Storage battery facility, the project will provide 750MW of flexible generation and storage capacity to support grid stability during periods of low renewable energy output.

Thurrock Power, Statera Energy’s 450MW flexible generation plant, has completed engine firing on its first unit, a key milestone as the project transitions from construction to commissioning. Located in Thurrock, UK, the site is now progressing towards full operational status, which is expected by autumn 2026.

Once online, the plant should provide dispatchable power equivalent to up to 1.5 million homes, supporting system reliability during periods when renewable generation is insufficient. It is co-located with Thurrock Storage, a 300MW/600MW-hour (MWh) battery system that was energised in August 2025.

Together, the two assets form the Thurrock Flexible Generation project, providing 750MW of generation capacity and 600MWh of storage. The battery will handle fast-balancing needs, while the flexible generation plant will run during longer low-renewables periods, giving the grid both rapid response and sustained backup.

The project has been backed by £395m ($530.76m) of debt financing and a long-term route-to-market agreement with Statkraft. Statera says Thurrock Power has also been designed with a future pathway to switch from natural gas to hydrogen, and the site is already delivering local benefits including apprenticeships and biodiversity enhancement.
