Naftogaz’s Ukrgasvydobuvannya launches new natural gas exploration well

The well was completed six weeks ahead of schedule.

Ukrainian oil and gas company Naftogaz Group's subsidiary Ukrgasvydobuvannya (UGV) has introduced a new high-yield exploration well, bolstering Ukraine's natural gas output.

With a daily production capacity of 383,000m³, the well is a strategic development to fulfil the country’s requirement for gas.

Naftogaz board chairman Sergii Koretskyi said: “I’m grateful to all Ukrgasvydobuvannya teams involved in design, drilling, completion, and other operations. This is a significant achievement, given the country’s need for gas.”

The well extends nearly 5.7km with a deviated trajectory and was completed six weeks ahead of schedule.

This achievement comes at a critical time for Ukraine, as Naftogaz, the primary producer of the nation's gas, suffered substantial damage to its production facilities due to Russian missile strikes earlier in the year.

These attacks cut production by up to 40%, with UGV experiencing a 50% loss in production due to shelling.

In total, 34 UGV sites were attacked between 2024 and 2025, with the most destructive strike occurring in February 2025.

In January 2024, the company announced that it was preparing to sign new gas storage agreements with German energy traders by March 2024. This move was aimed at enhancing the volume of natural gas stored in Ukraine's underground facilities.

Furthermore, in November 2023, a "promising" new natural gas deposit was discovered in the western part of the country by Naftogaz, through UGV. An unearthing has occurred in the Carpathians, within a field previously deemed depleted by the company.
