GlobalData’s latest report, ‘Q2 2017 Global Refinery Maintenance Review – India and the US Incur Most Maintenance in the Quarter’ suggests that globally, Asia had the highest refining capacity under maintenance (both planned and unplanned) among all the regions in the second quarter of 2017 with 4,094 thousand barrels per day (mbd). North America (1,872mbd) and the Middle East (736mbd) had the second- and third-highest refining capacities under maintenance, respectively.

Asia, North America and the Middle East also lead among countries in terms of refining capacity under planned maintenance, with 3,708mbd, 1,274mbd and 736mbd, respectively. North America had the highest refining capacity under unplanned maintenance in quarter-two of 2017 with 598mbd. Asia and the Caribbean follow with 386mbd and 335mbd, respectively.

Among countries, the US (1,431mbd), Japan (1,048mbd) and India (1,012mbd) had the highest refining capacity under maintenance (both planned and unplanned) in the quarter. The US (1,163mbd), Japan (1,048mbd) and India (1,012mbd) also lead in terms of refining capacity under planned maintenance in the second quarter of 2017. In terms of refining capacity under unplanned maintenance in the quarter, Curacao (335mbd), Mexico (330mbd) and Singapore (290mbd) had the highest among countries.

GlobalData’s downstream research shows that among refineries, Yeosu in South Korea had the highest refining capacity under maintenance (both planned and unplanned) in the quarter with 786mbd. The Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery in Kuwait had the second highest with 466mbd followed by the Whiting refinery in the US (430mbd). The three refineries also lead globally in terms of planned maintenance. The Curacao refinery in the Caribbean, Salina Cruz refinery in Mexico, and Jurong Island II refinery in Singapore had the highest unplanned maintenance in the quarter, with 335mbd, 330mbd, and 290mbd, respectively.

The operators with the highest refining capacity under maintenance (for both total and planned) were GS Caltex Corporation, Kuwait National Petroleum Company K.S.C. (KNPC) and BP, with 786mbd, 736mbd, and 525mbd, respectively. The three refineries also lead globally in terms of planned maintenance. Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA), Pemex, and Singapore Refining Company Pvt Ltd were the top operators in terms of refining capacity under unplanned maintenance in the quarter with 522mbd, 330mbd and 290mbd, respectively.
