ExxonMobil will pay $25m as part of a settlement to clean up an oil spill in New York, US.

The settlement requires ExxonMobil to conduct a comprehensive clean-up of its Greenpoint facility in Brooklyn, including oil floating on top of the water table and contaminated groundwater and soil, according to Reuters.

New York sued ExxonMobil for the 17 million gallon spill in 2007.

The settlement at the US district court in Brooklyn resolves that lawsuit, but still needs final approval by a federal judge.

ExxonMobil first realised in 1978 that the land it owned in Greenpoint was contaminated and since 1990 it has been extracting oil from the ground.
