Consortium Congas has begun work on a natural gas distribution project in Peru’s Ica region.

Congas, comprising EEB and TGI, received a 30-year concession from the country’s government in 2008 to design, build, operate and maintain the system, which will transport Camisea gas.

The 220km Humay-Marcona line will supply the cities of Ica, Nasca and San Juan de Marcona and to firms Minera Shougang and CFI Industries.

The Kuntur Transportadora de Gas’ Gasoducto Andino del Sur natural gas pipeline includes the 37.6km Humay-Pisco line, which will supply the city of Pisco and its industrial area.

The $1.3bn pipeline will transport gas from Camisea to Ilo port and estimated demand is expected to be 1.14 trillion cubic feet over the 30-year period.

The first of 82 workshops are open as part of the environmental permitting process and construction is expected to begin in January 2011.
