Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has ordered EOG Resources to suspend its natural gas well drilling activities in the US state following a well blow-out on 3 June 2010.
The blow-out at one of its Clearfield County wells leaked natural gas and at least 35,000 gallons of drilling wastewater for over 16 hours.

The DEP has banned all drilling and hydrofracturing operations until the completion of its investigation and required changes have been made by the firm.
EOG Resources will be prohibited from drilling activities for up to seven days, engaging in fracking operations for up to 14 days and completing or initiating post-fracking operations for 30 days in wells throughout the state.
Based on the investigation results, the DEP will determine whether further action, including fines and penalties, is required against the firm.
The agency’s initial investigation determined that a blow-out preventer on the well failed, but it does not yet know if that failure was the main cause of the incident.
