Enbridge plans to raise the capacity of its Bakken crude oil pipeline by 145,000 barrels a day with an investment of about $550m to deal with the oil-rich formation’s growing production.

The capacity boost to 325,000bpd will accommodate growing production from the Bakken and Three Forks formations, which are located in Montana, North Dakota, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

The programme is a series of pipeline expansion projects to provide additional capacity from North Dakota into the Enbridge Mainline at Manitoba by the first quarter of 2013.

The Bakken expansion programme will involve US projects worth $370m and Canadian projects worth C$190m ($179m).
