A valve has exploded at a Novatek gas processing plant in Russia’s Arctic Yamal-Nenets region, leaving one worker dead and 12 injured.

The operations building was destroyed in the incident although the explosion did not result in a fire, according to Reuters.

Novatek is Russia’s largest independent gas company. Its Khancheiskoye field, where the explosion took place, produced 3.1 billion cubic metres of gas in 2009.

The Khancheiskoye production accounted for about one-tenth of the firm’s total production last year.
