Afren had previously encountered an estimated 409m of net oil pay at the well from Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic reservoirs when spud to a total depth of 3,700m.

Afren chief executive Osman Shahenshah said, "The latest results on the Simrit-2 exploration well confirm the transformational potential of this discovery to Afren, further validated by the test results, suggesting excellent production capability."

While the partners plan to conduct 12 separate drill stem tests throughout the Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic aged reservoirs, only three DSTs have been completed so far at separate zones within the Triassic age Kurra Chine Formation.

Analysis of the well data indicated the presence of light oil shows throughout the deepened sections, extending the estimated net pay encountered by the well to 460m.
