Germany-based DMT’s exploration and geosurvey division has won a contract for a 3D-seismic project to explore for oil in the Austrian Alps.

The deal has been awarded by the Rohöl-Aufsuchungs AG (RAG) and entails large-scale surveys in Steyr and the surrounding area of the Upper Austria prospect spanning 370km².
Work will continue until the end of 2012 and will include permitting and surveying, field measurement and seismic refraction surveying in order to locate deposits.
DMT said the survey will use vibroseis technology, with which off-road vibrovehicles produce shock waves which are emitted into the ground at around 15,000 points.
These waves are then reflected and refracted by strata, fractures and other underground geological structures.
