Enbridge and Enbridge Energy Partners (EEP) are to spend $120m expanding two pipelines in order to provide increased access to refineries in the US and Canada.

An investment of $100m will be used to expand EEP’s Line 5 light crude line between Superior, Wisconsin and Sarnia, Ontario, by 50,000 barrels per day.

Enbridge will also reverse a portion of Line 9 in western Ontario to permit crude oil movements eastbound from Sarnia to Westover with an investment of $20m.

The projects will increase light crude production from the Bakken shale and Alberta to meet refinery needs in Michigan, Ohio and Ontario.

The projects include a transportation outlet for light crude, which will provide more favourable supply costs to refiners that are dependent on crude priced off the Atlantic basin.
