Canada-based oil and gas company Gran Tierra Energy said that it has drilled and obtained well-log results from the Bretaña Norte 95-2-1XD exploration well in Peru.
Oil traces were discovered at the top of the target Vivian reservoir section and coring operations were then commenced, which resulted in the recovery of saturated core in most of the oil column.

Log interpretations and MDT fluid and pressure sampling tests have indicated that Vivian Sandstone includes an oil-bearing sandstone reservoir at 9,408ft measured depth (MD) or 8,851ft true vertical depth (TVD), with about 99ft gross oil column thickness and 53ft net pay thickness.
The company is designing a testing programme for the Bretaña Norte well to evaluate reservoir productivity with results expected in late February.
Gran Tierra Energy president and CEO Dana Coffield said Bretaña Norte 95-2-1XD exploration well includes three cores, of which 90% of the oil-bearing reservoir section has been successfully acquired.
"Oil samples have also been acquired and are being analyzed which, with a testing program that is currently being designed to test reservoir productivity, will assist in determining the commerciality of the discovery," Coffield added.

The Caballos formation includes 209ft gross reservoir or 104ft TVD net reservoir thickness, while T Sandstone formation comprises 85ft gross reservoir or 72ft TVD net reservoir thickness.
The U Sandstone formation includes 44ft TVD gross reservoir or 32ft TVD net reservoir thickness.
