US-based John Crane Production Solutions (JCPS), a subsidiary of John Crane, has introduced a new high-temperature fiberod fiberglass sucker rod for use in upstream oil production in shale fields.

The new fiberglass sucker rod, which is corrosion-resistant, includes resin matrix that can withstand high temperatures of up to 285 degrees Fahrenheit.

The company has developed the technology from the original light-weight rod which was developed 20 years ago, and is currently in use at some of the world’s largest oil fields, claimed John Crane.

The high-temperature rod will replace the heavy and expensive pumping units and will be an energy efficient option for use in difficult conditions.

John Crane’s president and CEO Duncan Gillis said shale fields are a significant and viable energy source to meet growing energy demands.

"We developed this new technology so the extreme temperatures that can be found in shale field production would not be a barrier to entry for our customers," added Gillis.

The new fiberglass sucker rod is used in Eagle Ford shale field in south Texas and other oil and natural gas fields in California and North Dakota, US, where it produced about 4,000 barrels of oil a day and has contributed to creating about 40,000 jobs in the surrounding area.

JCPS provides sucker rod products, rod pumps, specialty products and on-site technical service to customers in upstream oil market.
