Dunga Phase

Denmark-based oil and gas company Maersk Oil has announced that oil production has begun at its Dunga Phase II project in Kazakhstan, with an additional two wells from the project also ready to start production this week.

A $1bn project, the Dunga Phase II project is one of the first major oil exploration projects by Maersk Oil.

The current production at Dunga Phase II, combined with other major development projects, is expected to increase the company’s total production by 50% to 400,000 barrels per day by 2020.

Four drilling rigs will be deployed at Dunga to complete a new well every three weeks, within the next three years.

Upon the completion of drilling all 198 wells by 2015, production is expected to reach 30,000 barrels per day at Dunga Phase II, while the company’s total output will reach 15,000 barrels per day.

The Dunga field is presently producing 7,000 barrels per day of oil.

With a 60% interest, Maersk Oil is the operator of the field, while other partners, Partex Corporation and Oman Oil Company, each holds 20% interest in the field.

Maersk Oil Kazakhstan managing director, Morten Kelstrup, said the company had been successful in its commitment to delivering oil by December 2012.

"The Dunga field has a lot of potential. This is just the first step in a long journey with an even higher activity level in 2013 and until expected project completion in 2015," Kelstrup added.

Kelstrup also said that the company is already considering a Phase III project for Dunga and expects to spud other appraisal and exploration wells in the area.

The company has previoulsy operated production of about 625,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day offshore Denmark, UK and Qatar.
