Global power systems company Rolls-Royce has been awarded a $28m contract to provide equipment and services to PetroChina for expanding the flow of natural gas through the Lunnan to Tulufan branch of the second West to East Pipeline Project (WEPP II).

The company will supply two RB211 gas-turbine-driven pipeline compressor units to install at the WEPP II.

The Lunnan to Tulufan pipeline, which connects Lines I and II of WEPP, linking the western Xinjiang region to Fujian province in the south-east of China, transports around 17 billion cubic metres of gas a year.

In total, the WEPP supplies around 47 billion cubic metres of gas a year.

Rolls-Royce north-east Asia regional director Patrick Horgan said: "We look forward to expanding our China presence in the years ahead, strengthening customer and supplier relationships across the civil aerospace, marine, energy and civil nuclear markets that we serve."

Rolls-Royce has supplied equipment to the WEPP since 2004. The company will manufacture and package the equipment at its energy facilities in Montreal and Quebec in Canada and Mount Vernon and Ohio in the US.
