Global ethylene glycol capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next five years, potentially increasing from 56.97 mtpa (million tonnes per annum) in 2022 to 74.21 mtpa in 2027, a total increase of 30%. 41 planned and announced projects are expected to come online, predominantly in Asia then followed by the Middle East over the coming years.

Asia is expected to add a capacity of 11.98 mtpa from 14 new-build planned and announced projects. The region is also expected to add a capacity of 0.18 mtpa from the expansion of existing projects, with one already announced and two planned.

Within Asia, India leads with the largest capacity additions, with a capacity of 7.25 mtpa from eight planned and announced projects. The main capacity addition will be from an announced project, Reliance Industries’ Jamnagar ethylene glycol plant 2, with a capacity of 4.50 mtpa. It is expected to commence production of ethylene glycol in 2026.   

The Middle East follows next with a capacity of 2.79 mtpa from seven new-build planned projects. There is no expansion of existing projects in the region. The Bushehr Petrochemical Company’s planned Assaluyeh ethylene glycol plant in Iran leads with a capacity of 0.55 mtpa and is expected to come online in 2024.
