A recently granted patent (Publication Number: US11913308B2) outlines a method for testing the surface control system of a drilling rig using an electronic application. The method involves identifying a downlink testing sequence for the surface control system, which includes varying target operating parameters of the mud pump system and/or drive system over a specified time period. The application then instructs the surface control system to operate accordingly and measures the output values of the system. Based on the measured values, the application calculates differences from the target values and determines if the system is compliant or non-compliant based on a predetermined level of tolerance. A graphical user interface displays the compliance status of the surface control system.

Furthermore, the patent describes a drilling apparatus that includes a surface control system of a drilling rig and an electronic application. The application is designed to identify a downlink testing sequence, instruct the surface control system to operate accordingly, receive and analyze output values, and determine the compliance status of the system. The method also involves displaying the compliance status on a graphical user interface. Additionally, the apparatus can be used to provide instructions to a bottom hole assembly (BHA) of the drilling rig, including a rotary steerable system, and confirm the success of the downlink operation based on data received from the BHA. This innovative approach aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of drilling operations by ensuring the proper functioning of the surface control system.
