The Sawan South JV spudded-in the well in June 2024 and has successfully drilled to a depth of 12,442ft.

In a stock exchange announcement, OGDCL reported that the well was successfully tested, producing approximately ten million standard cubic feet of gas per day with a choke size of 24/64in and a wellhead flowing pressure of 4,000 pounds per square inch.

United Energy Pakistan operates the Sawan South JV with a 75% stake.

Its partners include OGDCL (20%), Government Holding Private (2.5%) and Sindh Energy Holding (SEHL) (2.5%).

The new discovery has reduced the risks associated with further exploration in the Sawan South Block.

OGDCL added: “The said discovery will also help and contribute towards improving energy security of the country from indigenous resources and add to the hydrocarbon reserves base.”

At the end of last month, OGDCL announced a gas condensate discovery at the Baloch-2 exploration well in the Sinjhoro block of the Sanghar district in Sindh province.

This discovery marked the first milestone in the Sinjhoro Block from the Sembar Formation, which is recognised for its significant source potential and widespread presence in the Middle and Lower Indus basin of Pakistan, OGDCL said.

OGDCL said at the time: “The discovery not only confirms the untapped potential of the Sembar Formation but also opens a new play, paving the way for further exploration and development of hydrocarbon reserves in the block.

“In addition to appraisal and development of Baloch 2, OGDCL is proactively planning to re-enter existing shut-in wells and swiftly develop the full potential of Sembar Formation.”

Earlier this month, a significant discovery of oil and natural gas reserves was made in Pakistan’s territorial waters, which could be substantial enough to potentially change the country’s economic trajectory.
