The first gas from the Ghazeer field comes just three years after the Khazzan gas field (Phase 1) came online and four months ahead of the original schedule.

Block 61 is operated by BP Exploration (Epsilon) with a 60% participating interest. Other partners include PC Oman Ventures (10%) and Makarim Gas Development (30%).

PETRONAS president and Group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik said: “PETRONAS is proud to be part of the Block 61 consortium that has successfully delivered the start-up of Ghazeer ahead of schedule and most importantly, safely, amid challenging market conditions.

“This shared success is a result of a strategic collaboration among the consortium partners, contractors and the Government of the Sultanate of Oman.

“We look forward to strengthening this partnership as we progress together towards delivering clean, safe and reliable energy supply to the Sultanate of Oman, in line with the country’s 2040 vision.”

The first phase of the Khazzan project became operational in 2017 within budget and ahead of schedule.

According to PETRONAS, Block 61 will deliver an estimated 10.5Tcf of recoverable gas resources. It can deliver about 35% of total gas in Oman.

Tengku Muhammad Taufik added: “As a progressive energy and solutions partner enriching lives for a sustainable future, our stronger commitment towards a lower carbon future is an essential part of PETRONAS’ sustainability agenda to deliver long-term positive impact wherever we operate.”

In January last year, PC Oman Ventures closed the acquisition of a 10% interest in Block 61 of the Al Khazzan onshore gas field from Oman Oil Co Exploration & Production (OOCEP).
