Norway-based oil company Statoil has awarded a Nkr150m ($25m) contract to Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies to develop the first integrated environmental monitoring system for oil and gas activities.

Statoil will head a consortium that includes Kongsberg Maritime Subsea, IBM and DNV to carry out the three-year project, which is part of Statoil’s New Energy and HSE R&D programme.

Statoil employs several environmental monitoring methods at its installations, mainly on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

The programme aims to develop new subsea and topsides technology to produce an integrated environmental monitoring system by building on current technologies.

Statoil will contribute Nkr75m towards the development, with the remaining Nkr75m split among the consortium members.

The technology will be tested out by Kongsberg Maritime Subsea on the seabed of the harbour basin at Horten.

To monitor the environmental impact on the sea bottom, sensors will be attached to an installation to gather real-time physical, biological and chemical data, and to detect any deviations.

Considerable IT capacity is required to interpret the complete information flow from the sensors simultaneously, while coordinating monitoring with daily operations.

The project aims to demonstrate solutions for the continuous environmental monitoring of operations in sensitive areas, covering all phases of an offshore operation.

Kongsberg Maritime Subsea will provide sensor and communication technologies, IBM will give information integration and business analytics technology, and DNV will provide marine environmental analytics and risk management practices.

Statoil will have an active role in the project, contributing domain knowledge within offshore oil and gas operations.
