Lundin Petroleum has started drilling its third appraisal well, 16/5-2S, on the Avaldsnes discovery on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
The well is being drilled using the Bredford Dolphin semi-submersible rig up to 2,150m below sea level.
The main focus of the well is to appraise the Avaldsnes discovery following the 16/2-6 discovery well in 2010 and the successful appraisal of wells 16/3-4 and 16/2-7 earlier this year.
Drilling of the well will be complete within 40 days.
The PL501 licence is operated by Lundin Petroleum, which holds a 40% interest, along with partners Statoil and Maersk Oil Norway, which hold 40% and 20%, respectively.
