Energy data and intelligence provider TGS has signed an agreement with Ghana’s Petroleum Commission to deliver a new offshore 2D-cubed seismic project in the Keta Basin off the Ghanaian coast.

The project aims to produce a unified subsurface dataset for one of Africa’s significant under-explored regions.

The first phase of the Gulf of Guinea 2D-cubed project will incorporate data from 5,500km² of existing 3D seismic data and more than 14,700km of 2D surveys.

This information will be used as input to create a 25,300km² 2D-cubed seismic model, spanning both the shelf and deepwater portions of the Keta Basin.

TGS’ 2D-cubed process creates a unified, structurally consistent 3D seismic model by combining various older 2D and 3D datasets.

An advanced method of interpolation is used to bridge gaps between survey lines and reduce legacy migration artifacts.

This approach is said to produce a seamless 3D dataset to assist explorers and aid in evaluating opportunities throughout the region.

TGS expects the final products to be available in the first quarter of 2027.

TGS multi-client executive vice-president David Hajosky said: “The Keta Basin holds real untapped potential, and our customers need a clear, reliable view of it to act with confidence.

“By bringing decades of 2D and 3D data together into a single 2D-cubed volume, we are giving explorers a ready-to-use foundation for prospect maturation, reflecting TGS’ continued commitment to delivering high-quality seismic data that identifies new resource potential and supports increasing exploration activity across the Transform Margin of West Africa.”

The Keta Basin contains one of Africa’s largest under-explored deepwater fan systems.

The output of the project is designed to offer explorers a consistent view across the basin. It is intended to help with the assessment and screening of exploration opportunities without the immediate need for new 3D seismic acquisition.

In November last year, TGS obtained the rights to market and license geophysical data from offshore basins in the Comoros, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, after reaching an agreement with the Gouvernement de L’Union des Comores and the Bureau Géologique des Comores.
